On the road between Skala and Hora is the small fortified "Monastery of the Apocalypse", which was built in the 17C. Hidden away in a pine forest, this peaceful and airy place growing with flowers offers fine views of Skala Bay. It is hard to believe that such a charming place was where St John suffered such torment. A few steps surrounded by monks' cells lead down to the sacred grotto, where the apostle is said to have had his terrifying visions of the Apocalypse and heard the voice of God.
