Perched on a mound overlooking the salt marshes (magnificent view), the old town bears witness to the development of Pag in the Middle Ages when it drew its prosperity from the salt trade. It was deserted after the Zadar raid in the late 14C. The attractive façade of its church inspired that of the new town's. The edifice is still home to the ancient statue of the Virgin who protects Pag and who is taken down every year on August 15 to the parish church, where she remains until September 8.
