The Canadian parliament stands on top of a cliff overlooking the Ottawa River and Rideau Canal, from a height of nearly 50m/165ft, hence its name the "Hill". The impressive Gothic-style ensemble dominates the northern side of Confederation Square. In the middle of this triangular-shaped island stands the towering granite archway of the National War Memorial, which was dedicated in 1939 by King George VI. Parliament Hill is the scene of numerous official events, including the changing of the guard.
