The most emblematic image in Monte Albán, the wall of "Dancers", is part of building L (south platform) and is one of Monte Albán's first constructions. These stone steles in rows (the originals are preserved in the museum) show in profile bas-reliefs of naked men with closed eyes and open mouths, some of whom have mutilated genitals. Are they dancers? Sacrificial victims or perhaps enemy prisoners? Experts have yet to unlock the mystery of these enigmatic statues.
