The cathedral's three spires dominating Jackson Square are an iconic city landmark. Dedicated in 1851, the present structure is actually the third church on this site; a fire destroyed the first one, and the second version collapsed during a renovation in 1849. The cathedral as you see it now is built of wood covered with stucco, rather than stone like its European counterparts. Although the outside of the structure is grander than the inside, it's worth stepping in to admire the interior.
