On these bucolic pastures west of the Blue Ridge, 257 cadets from the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington helped Confederate troops prevail over Union forces in May 1864. Today the military institute stands over the historical park, which comprises the 116ha battlefield, the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, and 19C Bushong Farm, which served as a hospital during the battle.
