Surrounding the square are three buildings constructed by the Siyadi, a wealthy family of pearl merchants. The mosque is the oldest building, with its sumptuous prayer hall. To receive their guests, the Siyadi built a majlis, a splendid four-storey building whose exterior ornamentation reveals the opulence of its owners. It was here that the Siyadi received pearl traders from India and Europe. The immense family palace, with its succession of courtyards and pavilions, still belongs to the family.
