Founded in 1923 to preserve six Anasazi Indian villages on both sides of the Utah-Colorado border, Hovenweep includes the unusual Square Tower Ruins, where a small visitor center offers exhibits. The unique square, oval, circular and D-shaped towers provided residents, as recently as 800 years ago, with extensive views of their surroundings. A fairly level 8mi trail system, beginning at the Square Tower Ruins, passes the remains of an irrigation system along with pit dwellings, ceremonial places and burial sites. Roads to other sites are unpaved and dusty, but the main route to the Square Tower Ruins is now paved.
