Founded in 1869, the Fine Arts Museum (the oldest museum in Marseille) has rediscovered its former glory, with large exhibition rooms and windows and two frescoes by Puvis de Chavannes (1824-98) gracing the main staircase. The museum layout was redesigned completely in late 2019, revealing treasures that had been previously kept in reserve. The permanent collection comprises more than 8 000 paintings and sculptures extending over four centuries, from the 16C to the 19C.
