Spread across 1,000 acres at the confluence of the Heart and Missouri Rivers opposite Bismarck, this park combines history and recreation. There are three primary sites. Cavalry Square includes the Custer House, from which Lt. Col. George Custer set out in 1876 for his "last stand" at the Little Bighorn. Costumed guides offer tours of the home and other structures in Fort Abraham Lincoln, abandoned in 1891 and later restored. Portions of On-A-Slant Indian Village, including four Mandan earth lodges used from the mid-16C to mid-18C, have been reconstructed. High on a hill are the blockhouses of an old Infantry Post, with an interpretive center nearby.
