Carved entirely out of the rocks, the Cuauhcalli is entered through the mouth of a monster with a forked tongue into a circular chamber along which stretches a bench with a sculpted jaguar and two eagles. An eagle-shaped altar in the centre is touched by the sun's rays on the day of the winter solstice. The temple was a place where warriors were initiated, reflected by the iconography: a war drum at the entrance, statues (only the bases remain) of a jaguar-warrior and an eagle-warrior.
