Madrid's elegant residential district extending eastwards from its old town boasts tree-lined avenues, such as paseo del Prado, lined with stately apartment blocks, luxurious palaces and old mansions now converted into museums. It is a pleasant area for a stroll, perhaps between a visit to the Prado museum and the Retiro park.
