The fortress of Livadia, which stands on top of Mt Agios Ilias (402m), controls the approaches to Thessaly. The position was first fortified in the 13C by the Franks, who held Thebes, but the present fortress dates from the 14C, when the Aragonese ruled the land. The former outer bailey of the castle precedes the main gate, which leads to the keep. Near it is St Elias Chapel, which replaced a temple of Zeus.
