At the top of the Merveille ("The Marvel": the buildings on the northern side), as if suspended between the sea and the sky, is the cloister. In the space separated off by it, the gallery arcades are supported by delightfully slender single colonettes arranged in quincux to enhance the impression of lightness. They are decorated with remarkably elaborate sculpted foliage, ornamented with the occasional animal or human figure.
