In the heart of the historical centre, the pleasant, pedestrianised Plaza de Santa Ana is surrounded by palm trees and overlooked by fine façades. The façade of the old town hall (1842) faces that of the cathedral. On a third side you can see the Bishops' Palace (Mudéjar-influenced doorway, a style inspired by Moorish art) and the Renaissance-style Casa del Regente. The bronze dogs recall the probable etymology of the name of the Canary Islands, which is thought to derive from the Latin canis (dog).
