To-ji Temple is renowned for its five-storey pagoda (remodelled in the 17C), which is the tallest in Japan (57m). The birthplace in the 8C of a new Buddhism, that of the Shingon-shu sect, To-ji has much more to offer than the popular postcard image of its pagoda. The main hall (Kondo) houses a triad of the Medicine Buddha Yakushi Nyorai, while the Kodo room is home to a large mandala depicting a Sun Buddha encircled by 21 statues of secondary deities.
