Kato Chora's fortifications (1565) are among the Venetian gems that attract visitors to Kythira. Atop its rocky spur flanked by two ravines, it stands haughtily, like a figurehead advancing towards a sea of trees. The entrance gate, decorated with the Lion of Saint Mark, hides a real city, with houses, now exposed to the elements, lining its narrow streets... The only exception to the erosion of time are the Byzantine chapels (closed to visitors), which have been restored.
