Planted with trees by the French in the early 19C, the Spianada, a former defensive square built in front of the citadel in the Venetian period, is today the green lung of the city of Corfu and makes for a pleasant spot for a stroll. It also has a cricket ground, part of its British heritage, and the Maitland Rotunda, built to commemorate an English high commissioner. Bordering it is the Liston, the elegant arcades of which were built between 1807 and 1814 by the French, inspired by the rue de Rivoli in Paris.
