High on an outcrop, Karatsu Castle was built between 1602 and 1608. The feudal lord Terasawa Hirotaka decided to build the castle reusing the materials of the great castle of Hizen Nagoya which had belonged to the conquered General Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Dismantled during the Meiji Period, it was rebuilt in 1966. Artefacts from excavations, Samurai armour and Karatsu ceramics are exhibited. Stunning view from the top of the keep over the islands, beach and beginning of the Higashi-Matsuura peninsula.
