With more than 28,000 works in 60 galleries and nine period rooms, this museum is one of the finest general art museums in the US. It is renowned for Chinese antiquities, paintings by European masters, and a collection of 20C sculpture. Lodged in a monumental five-story building near Country Club Plaza since 1933, it currently is undergoing a $100-million renovation and expansion expected to continue through 2005. European paintings (14C-19C), sculpture and decorative arts (11C-18C) are housed on the museum's first floor. Here are noted works by Rembrandt, Pissarro, Gauguin, Monet and others. American works, including Thomas Hart Benton's 10-panel The American Historical Epic (1919-24), share the second floor with art by such 20C masters as Miró, O'Keeffe, Picasso and Rothko. Highlighting the Asian collection are a Chinese temple room with a 15C carved wooden ceiling, 13C BC furnishings and porcelain, and an array of T'ang Dynasty tomb figures. A sculpture park presents the largest US collection of bronzes (more than 50) by Henry Moore, and the museum's trademark Shuttlecocks by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
