Austere, yet possessed of a brooding and disconcerting beauty, this island is home to the famous (and troubling!) Stromboli volcano, which frequently spurts out jets of gas and flames accompanied by explosions. Walkers (strong ones) should definitely consider climbing the volcano, with an authorised guide, to take in its five craters. By night, the expedition is absolutely unforgettable.
