Five hundred gilded statues of arhats (disciples of Buddha) accompany visitors as they make their way up the steps (over 400) to the 10 000 Buddhas Monastery. There are in fact around 13 000 statuettes dotted around the main hall of the shrine, each one unique. Hidden away amid this unusual collection is the embalmed and gilded body of the monk who founded the monastery.
