In the 12C, this temple, built in the 9C, boasted over fifty pagodas thereby demonstrating the influence of the Fujiwara family. It was burnt to the ground in a terrible fire in 1226. Should your imagination fail you, you can simply observe the foundations that are dotted around the Gokuraku-johdo garden, which is intended to represent the paradise of Pure Land of Amida Buddha. Every fourth Sunday of the month of May an elegant aristocratic country party is re-enacted, as in the time of the Fujiwara family.
