This small gem of a building was designed by Kentucky's foremost antebellum architect, Gideon Shryock. Then relatively unknown, Shryock soon became famous for his flawless Greek Revival creation in Frankfort. Constructed in 1830, the building mimics the Greek Temple of Minerva with the addition of a cupola. Inside, the rotunda features rust-colored floors crafted from Kentucky river-bottom marble, and intricate plaster ceiling moldings. A freestanding spiral staircase leads from the rotunda to the second-floor legislative chambers, preserved as they were in the 1850s with several original desks.
