With Lankatilaka and Gadaladeniya Viharaya, Kataragama Devale is part of a group of temples founded in the 14C before Kandy became the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom. The gate is adorned with carvings of peacocks, the traditional mount of the god Kataragama. The centrepiece of the site is a striking dig-ge (Drummers' Hall before the temple) bristling with ornately sculpted columns.
