The ruins of Hailes Castle (13C-15C) overlook the River Tyne. It belonged to the Hepburn family, most notably James, Mary Stuart's third husband. It is said that they rested here in April 1567. To the south, the volcanic outcrop that is Traprain Law (239m) contrasts with the verdant landscape of the region; this defensive site was probably the capital of the ancient Votadini tribe. The 5C Traprain Law treasure, Roman silverware, on display in the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, was found here.
