The Indian community in Durban goes back to the Indians who came to work in the sugarcane fields from the mid-19C to the early 20C. The area they live in, east of the city centre, is teeming with activity and has a rather Asian air about it. Enjoy a stroll around particularly lively and attractive Grey Street, in Madressa Arcade or down the alleyways of the Victoria Street Market. Juma Masjid, not far from the market, is one of the largest mosques in the Southern Hemisphere.
