The theatre dates from the 4C BC but was remodelled by the Romans in the 2C. It could hold the 5 000 spectators who would come to watch the recitals in honour of Apollo and Dionysus. The venue also hosted the musical events of the Pythian Games (cithara, flute, singing). From the top row of seats there is a spectacular view. The promenade allowing people to move around the theatre continues westwards as a path up to the stadium with fine views of the site of Delphi.
