Nebraska's largest and most historic state park, Fort Robinson covers 34sq mi in the heart of the Pine Ridge region. Established in 1874, the fort was used until 1948. Many pivotal events of the late-19C Indian Wars occurred here, including the 1877 killing of Chief Crazy Horse and the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak, an abortive escape attempt by 149 imprisoned and starving Cheyenne men, women and children. In the late 19C-early 20C, this was home to the African-American garrison known as the Buffalo Soldiers. The Fort Robinson State Park Inn & Lodge, in the 1909 enlisted men's barracks, serves as a visitor center. Tour trains and walking tours depart from this point. Opposite, in the 1905 post headquarters facing the parade grounds, the Fort Robinson Museum has exhibits on military history, including an unusual account of the war dogs trained to sniff out mines, carry messages and pull sleds.
