Founded as a small, private college in 1856 and evolving into a public, land-grant college by 1868, Oregon State still boasts a strong agriculture department, though nowadays other programs, such as forestry and engineering, also command respect. Today the university enrolls more than 15,000 students. Outlying tracts of the university include an experimental forest and the sheep barn, where visitors can watch lambs being born in the spring. The campus core consists of stately early-20C brick buildings, notably the Italian Renaissance Women's Building (1926), just west of the Quad.
