The Rookery, designed by the Chicago firm Burnham & Root, is renowned for the rich decor of its 12-storey façade combining red granite with terracotta and brick and neo-Romanesque and Queen Anne styles. The interior was remodelled in 1906 by Frank Lloyd Wright. The name refers to a colony of rooks, which perhaps alludes to the run-down appearance of the city hall which occupied this site until 1885, or more ironically to the politicians who came to "perch" here. Sculptures of rooks can also be seen on the entrance.
