Relegated to the exterior of the old town's ramparts, the Wat Pa Sak or "Temple of the Teak Forest" owes its name to the 300 teak trees planted at the time of its foundation in 1295. Although the sanctuary has only preserved a single pyramidal chedi, the well-restored temple itself is a jewel of Lan Na architecture, combining perfectly the three artistic style of Pagan, Haripunchai (Dvaravati) and Sukhothai. Crowned by a circular stupa, this reliquary tower is delicately embellished with sculptures of flowers and mythical animals (kala, makara and garuda).
