The longest remaining example of the original Denver and Rio Grande narrow-gauge line was built in the 1880s to haul miners and ore from the steep, mineral-rich western slope of the Rockies. It covers 64mi between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado, over trestles and through tunnels in the San Juan Mountains above the Los Piños River. Round-trip passage in vintage rail cars takes six to eight hours.
