The burial places of Karajía take the shape of purumachus, huge anthropomorphic sarcophagi made out of dried mud, perched upright in balconies dug into the cliff face. Inside the purumachus are mummies whose heads or decorative masks, also made out of dried mud, are embedded above the sarcophagus and adorned with a headdress or helmet, which has given rise to speculation that they were the graves of dignitaries or warrior chiefs.
