In the late 12C, Norman knight Hervé de Montmorency founded this Cistercian abbey, which ceased all activity under Henry VIII. The impressive ruins of the monastery and abbey church are visible in a field by an arm of the River Barrow. On the other side of the road, the castle, in ruins, was built in the 17C by the Etchingham family, who inherited the abbey. The next-door Visitor Centre is only worthy of mention for the pleasure of wandering around the maze.
