The source of the Tavignano, Lake Nino nestles in a huge vale of meadows, rich in rural appeal. The 6.3ha-lake, at an altitude of 1,743m, fills the Campotile, a large hollow created by glacial erosion, covered in gently sloping forests and meadows and dominated by a range of relatively smooth, rounded mountains. The lake is famous for its extensive pozzines, which are a sort of spongy grassland of fragile ecosystems, that can be dangerous. Farming has almost disappeared from the region, as the many derelict sheepfolds bear witness.
