The old church in the hamlet of Abercorn, rebuilt in 1579 and restored in 1838, includes a fine example of a lord's gallery, the Hopetoun Loft. When he designed it between 1707 and 1708, Sir William Bruce had the unusual idea of adding a suite of rooms over a funeral monument. The panelled gallery itself is reminiscent of a theatre box: the sculptures are by Alexander Eizat and the dazzling arms of the Hope family by Wiatt.
