The bastion de l'Étendard remains the most imposing part of the fortifications in the upper town. It watched over the Porte de Gênes, the only entrance to the town until the 19th C. Some of the great events in the history of Bonifacio are depicted here, such as the visits of Charles V and Napoleon Bonaparte, and the sinking of La Sémillante in the Lavezzi Islands. A copy of the "Lady of Bonifacio" and the fossilised skeleton of a Turkish soldier are also displayed here.
