Cape Bira marks the southeastern tip of the South Sulawesi peninsula. This region is one of the island's most arid, scattered with sparse vegetation and bristling with cacti. The population, principally Makassar and Buginese, remains closely tied to the sea and continues to build the elegant wooden cargo boats that have been sailing the ocean for centuries. See them at work at the Tana Beru shipyard. Back on land, the habitat is made up of elegant houses on piles, painted in bright colours.
