Built as a cathedral in 1950, the Gothic edifice, which is said to have been inspired by a church in Normandy (Notre Dame de Caudebec-en-Caux), dates back to the 14C. It houses a statue of St James, the town's patron saint, and the Virgin of Begoña, patron saint of Vizcaya. The chapels and cloister were built in the following century in the Flamboyant style, and the large Renaissance doorway was added in the 17C.
