The Bhimbetka natural rock shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, consist of more than 500 caves covered with prehistoric paintings. The site is surrounded by 21 aboriginal villages whose inhabitants live in a primitive manner that is remarkably similar to that depicted in the cave paintings.
