The road from Villard-sur-Doron, which skirts the cliff for a few miles, dominates the Doron de Beaufort valley. From the beacon (altitude 1,939m/6,361ft), the panorama embraces the Combe de Savoie, Aravis, Beaufortain and Mont-Blanc range, with to the right, the distinctive peak of Pierra Menta (alt. 2,714m/8,904ft). According to legend, it was formed when Gargantua kicked the Aravis range, furious that he wasn't able to climb over the Mont Blanc.
