This ghost town is located outside Death Valley National Park, but its history is closely linked to the Gold Rush that swept over Death Valley. Founded following the discovery of gold seams in the rhyolite quartz in 1904, the town boomed between 1905 and 1912, when its population reached up to 10 000. Many stone dwellings remain, but timber, a rare commodity in these parts, was looted when the town was abandoned.
