A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island is a rocky outcrop of volcanic origin that is much frequented by migratory birds, which come here to nest. It is also an incubator of marine life, making it a particularly popular diving site. Its cold waters attract eagle rays, red-lipped batfish, sailfish, dolphins and great numbers of sharks, including hammerhead sharks and the very rare smalltooth sand tiger.
