The mist of humidity lingering above a desert of ashes and rocks heralds Dettifoss, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the country, located in the Jökulsárgljúfur Gorge. Spanning 100m, and 45m high, it is the most powerful in Europe. On the west side, you come very close to the water. The viewpoint, subjected to spray and deafening noise, takes your breath away. The view down from the east bank takes in the waterfall right to the bottom.
