6 km south of Povoação Velha, on foot or in a 4x4, the Praia de Santa Mónica can compete for the title of most beautiful beach in the world. At 16km long, this ribbon of sand is indeed breathtaking. No wonder property developers are eyeing it: buildings are already going up to the east of the beach. The waves are quite powerful but do not prohibit swimming (with caution).
