In the heart of Leogang, this historic establishment dates back to 1326 and has been run by the same family for over 130 years. Barbara Kottke and her brother Hans-Jörg Unterrainer now represent the sixth generation, carrying on the tradition with great enthusiasm. In the cosy rustic-style dining rooms – or, in summer, on the terrace overlooking the parish church – diners can choose between "omnivore" and pescatarian versions of a six-course tasting menu. Chef Stefan Birnbacher's "Alpengewässer", for example, features a tranche of Salzburg sturgeon cooked with pinpoint precision until just translucent, topped with melted South Tyrolean lardo and served with a buttery and aromatic kohlrabi purée and a full-bodied elderflower beurre blanc. The equally tempting signature caviar dish can be added on to the set menu. Alternatively, Austrian classics are available from the more traditional à la carte menu. The excellent wine list spans Austrian and international labels, with the owner and his front-of-house and sommelier team clearly in their element here. Tip: The striking vaulted interior of the historic Samerstall next door makes an ideal venue for events. Attractive hotel rooms are also available.
