In the middle of a rich huerta, Murcia stretches across both banks of the Segura. Founded in 831, the town was reconquered in 1266 and prospered until the 18C with agriculture and silk weaving. The famous son of this land, Francisco Salzillo (1707-1783), is the last great name in Spanish polychrome sculpture. This university town has become a commercial and industrial centre.
