This fortified isthmus, joined to the mainland by a narrow coastal strip, was the first City founded in Europe around 1100 BC by the Phoenicians from Tyre. It became prosperous as a result of its monopoly on trade with America from the 18C. Today it is a modern town with 143,129 inhabitants and its charm arises from its rational 19C layout, the narrow streets, the squares with exotic plants and its colonial allure.
