Padua is a university town (housing the second oldest university in Italy after Bologna) and pilgrimage centre (thanks to St Anthony of Padua). The city lived most of its history under Venetian rule and is also an art centre, as the work of the following artists suggest: two Florentines, Giotto, who painted a magnificent cycle of frescoes here and Donatello, as well as the great local painter, Andrea Mantegna, who, in particular, was an innovator in the treatment of perspective.
